Nutrition and exercise keeps diabetes at bay
I can’t talk about diabetes and not mention Nutrition and Exercise. Nutrition and Exercise can help keep Diabetes at Bay.The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has launched the World Diabetes Day (WDD) 2017 campaign under the theme Women and diabetes – our right to a healthy future.
Key messages
All women with diabetes require affordable and equitable access to care and education to better manage their diabetes and improve their health outcomes.
Last year’s activities and materials did focus on promoting two key messages which is key going forward:
1. Screening for type 2 diabetes is important to modify its course and reduce the risk of complications.
2. Screening for diabetes complications is an essential part of managing type 1 and type 2 of diabetes.
IDF has estimated that globally as many as 193 million people, or close to half of all adults living with diabetes in 2015, are unaware of their disease. Most of these cases are type 2 diabetes. Early diagnosis and treatment can be initiated to reduce the risk of harmful and costly complications. People with type 2 diabetes live for several years without showing any symptoms, during which time high blood glucose is silently damaging the body. There is, therefore, an urgent need to screen, diagnose and provide appropriate treatment to people with diabetes.
Diabetes is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease, blindness, kidney failure and lower-limb amputation. Over one-third of people living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes develop some form of damage to their eyes that leads to blindness. These complications can be prevented or delayed by maintaining blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels as close to normal as possible.
PREVENTION
Eating healthy will help you manage your condition, leading to weight loss and other healthy lifestyle changes. Nutrition and exercise can help with maintaining blood sugar level. The Following Guidelines such as:-
- Portion sizes: The quantity of food one eats at every meal is important. Too much food at each meal times can impact blood sugar, meaning more sugar from carbohydrates enters the bloodstream at one meal time. Eating smaller portions bulked up by healthy snacks, such as nuts, keeps your blood sugar even; throughout the day.
- Food Combination: This is the way we combine certain food and how these food interacts differently with each other, to either spike or reduces the spike in blood sugar such as eating starchy carbohydrates with vegetables, protein with vegetables, and fats with vegetable. e,g Banana, and Peanut combined together helps control a blood sugar spike.
- Exercise: Exercise is good for helping to prevent diabetes complications. Physical activity also raises the use of glucose by muscles, thereby lowers blood glucose levels. Regular activity helps reduce the amount of insulin needed to control blood sugar levels by improving the body’s insulin efficiency.
Following these basic guidelines are beneficial, but you need to be consistent and patient as changes don’t happen overnight. It takes hard work and dedication to lose weight and keep it off, but it’s definitely worth it.
