Healthy eating should always be accompanied by exercise. It is essential that one incorporate some form of physical exercise in their strategy of weight reduction and control. The benefits of exercise can be summarized as follows:

  • Exercise assists in toning up all muscles and increased muscle tone; improves the shape of the body.
  • Regular sustained exercise increases lean muscle and reduces fat tissue.
  • As exercise becomes part of a person’s lifestyle, it becomes an enjoyable activity. People usually start ‘feeling better’ (remember the happy hormone).
  • Exercise is a natural stress reliever.
  • Increased physical activity contributes towards restful sleep.
  • Regular exercise of joints and muscle helps retain suppleness.
  • Exercise helps to strengthen bones and delays or even prevents the onset of osteoporosis.
  • Regular sustained exercise helps reduce high blood pressure and contributes towards keeping it at a normal level.
  • Exercise strengthens the cardiovascular system.
  • Regular sustained exercise reduces the level of fats and cholesterol in the blood as well as helps decrease the risk of heart attack and strokes.

It is never too late to start exercising, but if you are seriously overweight or have recently been very ill, have joint problems or have reached the age of forty or more, check with your general practitioner. Otherwise:

  • Do start exercising slowly and build up gradually.
  • Don’t push yourself to exhaustion; you should not be panting for breath.
  • Do warm up and gently stretch before exercising.
  • Don’t stop suddenly. Slow the pace to a comfortable level towards the end of your session.
  • Do remember, exercise aids digestion and the elimination of harmful substances in the body.
  • Don’t exercise after eating a meal. Wait at least an hour before starting.
  • Don’t ignore pain. Your body is telling you to stop.
